Fishing this past week on the Outer Banks has been pretty slow. We have had a Southwestern wind blowing for it seems like a couple of weeks. Offshore, this wind usually pushes the Gulfstream up and in, closer to Oregon Inlet. However, this Summer, it’s still down and out, closer to Hatteras.
This time of year, dolphin fishing is our ‘bread and butter’ fish we so heavily rely on. The lack of floating grass, trash, wood, etc. has produced very scattered dolphin fishing. We got lucky on the 19th and caught 60 fish, but it hasn’t been very consistent. Wahoo fishing has picked up with some fish over 40 pounds being landed. Scattered billfish, white and blue marlin and sailfish are also being seen everyday and should continue to increase in numbers as we head into August and September.
Inshore fishing has slowed down as well. Not many spanish mackerel being caught, but still good numbers of bluefish, spot and croakers. Hoping for a wind shift making for some more great fishing here on the Outer Banks.
Visit Phideaux Fishing to check on availability - we’d love to take you fishing. May and June are some of the best months for a variety of fish—dolphin-fish, wahoo, white and blue marlin and tunas make up the list. Fishing will only improve as the weather does. Hope to hear from you soon!
Until next week… tight lines,
Fishy Jeff
